Background

A Unique Origin

The American Curl’s story begins with a spontaneous genetic mutation in the domestic cat world. In June 1981, two cats with unusual curled-back ears appeared on a couple’s doorstep in Lakewood, California. One cat passed away, but the other, a friendly longhaired female named Shulamith, became a cherished family member.

Initially, Shulamith’s unique ears went unnoticed by her new family, who loved her for her sweet personality. After digging through local resources and finding no references to her likely breed, it became clear that Shulamith was one-of-a-kind. When she gave birth to a litter of four kittens in December 1981, two of them inherited her distinctive ears. This discovery led to the realization that the gene for curled ears is dominant—only one parent needs to pass it down.

Shulamith continued to grow the population of Curls, having litters with local tomcats. These early litters showcased the breed’s variety, including short and long hairs in numerous colors and patterns.

Recognition

Captivated by the kittens’ unique ears and gentle demeanor, Nancy Kiester acquired two Curls. After learning about the Scottish Fold, another breed with distinctive ears, she suspected these kittens were special. By 1983, the American Curl had gained recognition and popularity. By 1986, three major North American feline registries officially recognized the breed.

Personality & Temperament

American Curls are more than just their whimsical ears. These cats are affectionate without being needy, making them perfect companions. They love sitting on laps, nuzzling their family members and are often trained to play fetch. Their playful nature and curiosity make them great with kids, bringing endless joy and energy to any home.

Characteristics

American Curls are generally medium-sized with a moderate tone and strength. Their length is about one and a half times their height at the shoulder. The ears, with a 90-degree arc curl and rounded tips, are reasonably large. The eyes are moderately large, walnut-shaped, and come in clear, brilliant colors unrelated to their coat colors. American Curls boast a variety of patterns and colors, including pointed, shaded, smoke, bicolor, and more. Their silky coats can be either short or long, with minimal undercoat, making them easy to maintain.

Caring for your American Curl

To keep your American Curl looking and feeling its best:

  • Grooming: Regularly brush shorthair Curls with a grooming glove or soft brush. Longhaired Curls need less frequent brushing due to their minimal undercoat.
  • Nail Care: Trim their nails regularly using a clipper.
  • Ear Cleaning: Clean their ears regularly, as they are prone to black ear wax.
  • Dental Care: Brush their teeth with vet-approved toothpaste and schedule routine dental cleanings.
  • Diet: Feed them high-quality food without fillers and offer canned food as a supplement. Treats are loved but should be given sparingly.
  • Hydration: Provide fresh, clean water daily. Place the water bowl at least three feet from the food to ensure they drink enough water.

American Curls are healthy cats with no known genetic health issues, thanks to their diverse gene pool.
