Discover the Devon Rex Cat Breed

The Devon Rex is a charismatic and lively breed that loves to charm its owners with playful antics and demand attention in return. Their mischievous and energetic nature makes them the perfect companion for a bustling home. However, it’s best not to leave them alone for too long as their curious minds can lead them to entertain themselves in less-than-ideal ways. They get along wonderfully with children and other pet-friendly animals.

Background

The fascination with the Devon Rex began when Beryl Cox from Devon spotted an image of the Cornish Rex cat, which was gaining popularity in English cat shows. This sighting reminded her of the curly-coated cats that lived near her home by an old tin mine. One of these kittens, named Kirlee, had a unique curly coat despite its straight-haired barn cat mother. Kirlee would later become the foundation of the Devon Rex breed.

Initially, there was speculation that the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex might be related due to their similar curly coats. Breeders attempted to cross them, but the resulting kittens always had straight hair. It was eventually concluded that these were two distinct breeds.

Personality & Temperament

The Devon Rex is a true entertainer, often affectionately described as a small clown. With their playful nature and quirky personalities, these cats love to perform all sorts of antics to amuse their humans. They thrive on interaction and expect plenty of loving attention, often rewarding you with soothing purrs and gentle affection. Their lively and active disposition means they’re always up for fun, whether chasing after a favorite toy, climbing to new heights, or simply cuddling up for a cozy nap. Known for their unique curly coats and large ears, Devon Rex cats are not only adorable but also highly social, making them excellent companions that bring joy and laughter to any household.

Characteristics

Adult Devon Rexes are medium-sized cats known for their unique and striking appearance. They feature a large head proportionate to their body, a broad chest, and a triangular face embellished with large, expressive eyes and oversized ears. This combination gives them a whimsical, fairy-like, or elf-like look that captivates cat lovers. Their soft, curly coat is not only charming but also exceptionally delicate, requiring gentle care. Many Devon Rexes exhibit sparse fur in areas they tend to groom more frequently, making their coat feel light and airy. Additionally, their delicate whiskers often appear broken or irregular due to their softness, adding to their endearing uniqueness. Overall, the Devon Rex’s playful personality and affectionate nature make them beloved companions, often forming strong bonds with their human families.

Caring for your Devon Rex

Grooming a Devon Rex requires a gentle touch. Avoid brushing their fragile fur; instead, use a soft cloth to keep their coat in check. They shed lightly, leaving a thin layer of “lint” on their favorite spots. Their big ears can accumulate oil and should be cleaned when they look dirty. Regular claw trims and tooth brushing with vet-approved toothpaste are also essential.

Providing a tall scratching post, cat trees, and perches will satisfy their natural urge to scratch and climb. Devons love warm places, especially in the sunlight or near heat sources during winter.

When it comes to feeding, some Devon Rexes have strict dietary needs, while others self-regulate well. Kittens should be fed three times a day until six months old, then twice daily. Many Devons prefer to snack on kibble rather than eating wet food at set times. Ensure they always have fresh, pure water available, ideally placed away from their food bowl to encourage drinking.

Health-wise, the Devon Rex is generally robust but should be tested for genetic markers like Devon myopathy and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Regular vet visits are crucial for early detection of any potential health issues, ensuring your feline friend remains a healthy and happy family member for years to come.
